Robert “Bob” Thomas Bates, 94, of Hartford, passed away Saturday night, December 7, 2024, at Lake Vista in Cortland.
He was born April 18, 1930 in Sharpsville, the son of Charles L. Bates Sr. and Ruth Chilson Bates.
He was a 1949 graduate of Hartford High School.
He retired in 1982 after working 32 ½ years for Copperweld Steel where he worked as a roller in the 21’’ mill. He then drove cars for local car dealerships and 10 years at Hovis Auto Parts as a delivery guy.
Bob was a member of the Hartford Jerusalem Lodge #19. for 60 years. He was a 32nd Mason. He was also a member of the Hartford Methodist Church.
He enjoyed hunting and NASCAR racing.
He married Marianne Blaney on August 26, 1953. She preceded him in death on September 5, 2009.
He is survived by a daughter, LuAnne Bates of Hartford; two sons, Richard Bates of Hartford and Thomas Bates of Allen, TX.; four grandchildren, Beth, Justin, Brad and Brandon; seven great-grandchildren, Bobby III, Colton, Lilly, Jaxson, Beckett, Baker and Elle; and brother, David Bates of Hubbard.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Reed, Donald and Charles “Bud” Bates.
in lieu of flowers, the family would like donations be made in Robert's name to either the Ryan Blaney Foundation, P.O. Box 1875, Concord, NC 28026 or to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, Oh 44512.
Friends and relatives may call at Galloway-Onstott Funeral Home, 3451 St. Rt. 7, Hartford, Ohio 44424 on Thursday, December 12, 2024 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. with Rev. MaryAnn Rufener officiating at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Hartford Township Cemetery.
