Douglas DeJean Obituary

Douglas LeRoy DeJean, Fowler, Ohio, passed of a heart attack on February 25, 2022. Doug was born at home on June 25, 1933, in Warren, Ohio, to Roy and Lois (Platt) DeJean. Doug and his younger brother Jerry, who preceded him in death, served active duty in the United States Air Force (USAF). Doug graduated from Johnston High School in 1951 and worked at ITT Grinnell Corporation until he joined the Air Force on January 5, 1952. Doug attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was a flight line mechanic on an RB47E-Bomber at Lockbourne Air Force Base (AFB) near Columbus, Ohio. He was on temporary duty (TDY) in England and other locations, including a TDY in Thule, Greenland, in 1956. Doug served active duty until January 1957 then transferred to reserve duty as a flight line mechanic on a C119C at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station until 1963. After retiring from the Air Force, Doug proudly attended Wright-Patterson USAF reunions and kept in touch with his Air Force buddies.

Doug married Elizabeth (Betsey) Barfay on July 21, 1956, at the Hungarian Presbyterian Church in Warren, Ohio. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary last year! They built their family home in Fowler and had three loving children, Amy (Jack), Williams, Mark (Rusty Cross), and Elizabeth (Beth and Larry) Hitchcock. Doug loved and worried about his children, seven grandchildren, and twenty-six great-grandchildren, especially those who lived far away.

Doug was a Boy Scout (Troop 99) leader for many years and helped raise boys into fine young men. One of his favorite Scouting adventures was yearly camping and canoeing on the Allegheny River. He was a member of Fowler Community Church and relished country and family life, being in nature, and enjoyed various outdoor passions.

The Memorial is on Friday, March 4, 2022, at Fowler Community Church. The family will greet friends from 10:00 until noon with a service afterward. Pastor Joel Dickson will officiate the service and conduct the burial at Dugan Cemetery, Fowler, Ohio. Doug, our Dad, our dear friend and humble servant, is so very loved. We are sad that he passed away but celebrate his freedom from earthbound pain.

Memorial contributions may be sent in his name to the memorial fund of the church at P.O. Box 5, Fowler, Ohio 44418.
